Tips for How to Get Involved With the Industry

Getting involved with industry can be an easy transition if you have an area of interest and you want to speak on their behalf. Letting local sales representatives know you are interested in doing speaking programs for their company is a great start. They are the key contact people up the chain to getting more speaking engagements or becoming a trainer for certain companies. If you get interested in doing clinical trials and setting up a clinical trials unit as part of your office, it often just starts as letting the company know you are interested.

With the upcoming AAD meeting in San Diego there will be an opportunity for networking with companies that you may be interested in working with in the future.

 

With any side gigs you take on, just remember that everything you do may take away from your main practice time as well as your personal time so make sure you have that extra time available, so you do not get overextended and regret your decision.

How to get involved with industry as speaker:

 

If you host reps over lunch, approach the pharmaceutical rep for a medication that you use often and believe in about potentially speaking for them. Be open and honest about how much time you have to spend as well as how much travel you are willing to do.

There are several ways to get involved with the industry, whether you are in private practice or in an academic setting. First, reach out to a mentor that is already involved with the industry, as they would provide valuable insight. You should consider networking with pharmaceutical representatives that come by your office or meet with them during conferences (such as the upcoming AAD annual meeting). You need to be realistic on your commitment and your interests, as you would be promoting their products. It is important to stay up to date on research and industry trends, in order to enhance your contributions to the pharmaceutical company. You might even think about obtaining additional certifications in regard to clinical trials or drug development that would strengthen your expertise in the sector

  Coding Beyond the Clinic: New 2025 Updates in Telehealth E/M for Dermatology Practice By Susan Massick, MD, FAAD On January 1, 2025, the AMA introduced a new set of CPT codes specific to telehealth Evaluation and Management (E/M) services. While some private insurance payers have adopted the new 98000-series telehealth codes, Medicare has declined to recognize them, instead continuing to require the use of traditional E/M codes (99202–99215) with additional telehealth modifiers.   Of note, key telehealth flexibilities authorized under the 2023 Consolidated Appropriations Act (CAA)—including the waiver of geographic and originating site restrictions that allow Medicare beneficiaries to receive telehealth care from home—are set to expire on September 30, 2025. Until that time, dermatologists may continue providing telehealth services to Medicare patients at home.
