Creating Joy and Fun at Work

My office staff and I bring joy and fun to the workplace by having fun office dress up events. We love a group Halloween theme and do random themes throughout the year (pajama day, sports team day, Taylor Swift day). Not only does this create a bond with the staff but our patients love our fun energy as well.  Sometimes it’s just little things that bring a joyful boost to the workplace.

To cultivate joy in the workplace, my office has a potluck celebration for each person‘s birthday. Additionally, four times a year we have a craft night as we have a lot of talented crafters on staff. Lastly, we have numerous patients that come in telling jokes at each of their visits. We all informally compete to see who has heard the best one.

Creating Joy & Fun at Work is not always easy, but it is an essential part of an employee’s well being, as it reduces absenteeism, work-related errors, and employee’s turnover. It involves a personal commitment to engage others to create a positive mindset, connect with each other while setting boundaries and remaining productive. 

 

It all starts with a genuine smile and greeting as you step into the office.

 

In our office, we practice gratitude through kindness, such as compliments without people-pleasing. We engage in humor by sharing jokes on a daily basis while remaining professional. We hold quarterly meetings, where we share new ideas around lunch. Each month, we celebrate the employees’ birthday in various creative ways. We reward employees with surprise gifts, promotions, spot bonuses for exceptional jobs, not to mention end of the year holidays gifts and bonuses. 

 

We have flexible work schedules and appropriate compensations. We have company events where employees take initiatives to organize the activities. Our employees also volunteer with us in the community, which provides them with a sense of service.

Creating joy and fun in the workplace starts with a culture of mutual respect. Ensuring that every employee "feels seen and heard" and treated as one would like to be treated, while still not compromising on professionalism and good work ethics. Ensure that birthdays are recognized with signed cards and/or confectionery and support is shown during significant life events by sharing floral arrangements/ plant(s).
