Get to know the Community Service and Public Education Committee!

The goal of the Community Service and Public Education Committee (CSPE) is to plan and implement new service programs and initiatives while also supporting members in their service and outreach efforts. This is accomplished by providing resources and materials for events such as Play Safe in the Sun, TIPP (Transforming Interconnecting Project Program), and Coast-2-Coast. The committee members strive to create new educational material every year focusing on the whole health of women to upload to a shared presentation database that is easily accessed by all WDS members.

The committee is currently chaired by Dr. Jennifer Adams from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. The staff liaison is Mary Baierl (who is an invaluable resource in planning and executing all service initiatives!) The remaining members are from all over the country and foster strong working relationships with other WDS committees, particularly the Residents, Fellows, and Young Physicians Committee, the Regional Networking Committee, and the Social Media Committee.

As the New Year approaches, the CSPE members were asked about their service-related New Year’s goals! We hope these serve to inspire:

Dr. Jennifer Adams: "Women's Dermatologic Society has been a big part of our local annual service events - which we plan on continuing this year! I would like to continue to sponsor the WDS ‘Play Safe in the Sun’ NCAA College World Series and Cattleman's Ball events which are big outreach opportunities here in Nebraska. I am also excited about the ever-expanding library of PowerPoints that the Community Service & Public Education (CSPE) Committee have been working on, and hope to lead at least 3 TIPP (Transforming Interconnecting Project Program) outreach events at local women's shelters this year."

Dr. Mariam Mafee: I hope to get involved with our local community clinic for the uninsured. These opportunities diminished during Covid, so I look forward to returning!”

Dr. Jenna Lullo: “I plan to partner with my institution’s pathology department which has an established free screening event that provides free Pap smears and breast exams to the uninsured and contribute by providing free skin exams and dermatologic education as well.”

Dr. Janice Ma:As one of the newest members in this committee, I am inspired by my fellow committee members and their commitment to public education and service. In the upcoming year or two, I hope to be able to host a WDS event, such as the "Play Safe in the Sun" event, in the Los Angeles area.”

Dr. Emily Lebowitz:Last week I hosted a TIPP event at the Bowery Mission's Women's Center in Harlem. We discussed basic skincare and skincare on a budget. I am hoping to plan another women's shelter event in the spring of 2024.”

Dr. Kimber Sable: “My service-based New Year’s resolution for 2024 includes implementing a new Woman’s Dermatologic Society community outreach event and helping create the first TIPP Woman’s Shelter Initiative presentation in Spanish.”

Dr. Janelle Nassim:I hope to help host a skin cancer screening event at the 2024 Olympic Swimming Trials in Indianapolis!”

Dr. Thy Huynh: “We will continue our traditional yearly free skin cancer screening at Univ. of Mississippi. Adding onto the fun children's sun safety educational booths at the Children's Museum last summer, we plan to extend sessions at the Natural Science Museum in Jackson, Mississippi.”

Happy New Year, and happy service!
