WDS Service Spotlight: Women's Shelter Events

The mission of the Transforming Interconnecting Project Program: Total Women's Health Via the Dermatology Gateway (TIPP) is to lift up women in need. 

By treating the total woman, we will address all her needs. WDS members through this service initiative help by teaching skin care, self-care habits, nutrition, social skills and more, so that individual women may go out into the world and be the best versions of themselves, inside and out.

This initiative was developed by Dr. Pearl Grimes in 2018, and the first event was hosted by Dr. Elizabeth McBurney in Lafayette, LA that same year. Since then, WDS members have hosted over 40 events, both nationally and internationally. These events are conducted by WDS members who partner with their local shelters. The WDS provides presentation topics, such as skincare, nutrition, social skills, interview skills, and self-care as well as resources for the event including advertisement posters, catering, and goodie bags with free samples. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are currently developing ways in which we can provide resources through a virtual format. 

Dr. Molly Stout, a PGY-4 dermatology resident at Northwestern, hosted an in-person event in Chicago prior to the COVID-19 pandemic: “Organizing a shelter initiative event with my residency was a breeze - I just contacted a local shelter listed in the WDS directory, set a date, and the WDS coordinators took it from there! They arranged catering, swag bags and provided easy-to-present slide decks. We had a great night after clinic covering “Skin care on a budget” for some lovely ladies in Chicago!”

Dr. Ashley Wysong, Founding Chair of the Department of Dermatology at University of Nebraska, and her colleagues have hosted virtual events during the COVID pandemic and has a two-part WDS TIPP/Shelter virtual series at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women as well as the Women’s Center for Advancement planned for the coming months.

  Melanoma: Recent Advances and Future Possibilities By Cather McKay MD, FAAD The incidence of invasive melanoma increases each year. Deaths from melanoma steadily rose until 2014, decreased until 2019, but have been on the rise again. As of 2024, the American Cancer Society predicts the lifetime risk of melanoma is 1 in 33 for White Americans, 1 in 1,000 for Black Americans, and 1 in 200 for Hispanic Americans. 1 Despite lower incidence in patients with skin of color, diagnosis tends to occur later with poorer survival as a result. We as dermatologists aim to improve diagnostic accuracy and correctly stage our patients so they can be referred to appropriate specialists.   TIPP: Women’s Shelter Initiative to Empowering Women Through Dermatology By Stephanie Choi, MS4, and Hanna Englander, MS2; UMass Chan Medical School   Community engagement offers healthcare providers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact and gain valuable insights into caring for patients from diverse backgrounds and with varied needs. For UMass Chan medical students Stephanie and Hanna, one particularly rewarding opportunity has been the Women’s Dermatologic Society (WDS)’s Transformative and Interconnecting Program Project (TIPP), the women’s shelter initiative.  Through the TIPP program, medical students and dermatologists can organize dermatology educational workshops for participants at women’s shelters.
