Summer Skin Safety Pearls
Understanding your sunscreen label. Look
for the following details:

SPF of
at least 30
·
Broad-spectrum: to ensure protection from all UV rays
·
Water-resistant: especially when swimming or sweating
·
Tinted:
includes iron oxide, which is great for those who struggle with
hyperpigmentation
· Mineral vs. Chemical Ingredients: Mineral sunscreens include zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide and are great for sensitive skin. Chemical sunscreens are more likely to come in spray form and often rub in more easily. Use whichever one you are more likely to wear!
Sunscreen tips:

Sunscreen
is recommended daily on exposed skin- even on cloudy days! You can use
the UV index, included in weather forecasts on smartphones, to help you
know when UV rays from the sun are strongest. Sunscreen is recommended any time
the UV index is 3 or above.
·
Proper application is key. Adults need an ounce of sunscreen (enough to fill a
shot glass) to cover the body. Reapply every two hours.
·
Remember
to include your scalp, lips, and ears- common places for skin cancer!
·
Your
daily moisturizer or makeup with added sunscreen does not provide enough
coverage by itself. True sunscreen is recommended as well.
·
Make
sunscreen a daily habit by pairing it with another activity you already
do. For example, apply sunscreen each morning after brushing your teeth. If
you play golf, reapply sunscreen at the turn.
· Consider sunscreens in compact form for easy reapplication throughout the day.
Beyond sunscreen: No sunscreen is 100%
protective. Incorrect application or failure to reapply leads to many
accidental sunburns. In addition to sunscreen, consider the following:

Look
for clothing and hats with “UPF”, a measure like the SPF of sunscreen.

Keep
hats handy- near your door to grab when you walk outside, in your car to
throw on when you drive, and in your beach bag.
·
Seek
physical shade inside or under an umbrella during peak UV hours, usually
between 10 am and 4 pm.
· Golfers can wear two pairs of gloves to protect their hands. Athletes and runners can wear sleeves to protect their forearms.
